Title: Economic Return Comparison of Several Lumber Production Systems Designed for Small-Log Conversion

Three different types of small-log conversion systems were evaluated using a simulation model in an attempt to determine that system promising the greatest potential return on the investment dollar. Analyses were based upon processing of aspen typical in diameter and quality to that found in northern Minnesota. At these log sizes, scrag and chipper-canter mills were found to yield essentially the same projected return on invested capital; both mill types were found to give higher returns than a round log gang system. Variation of feed rate, investment level, and log distribution showed chipper-canter mills to yield slightly better returns than the other mill types at average log diameters above the 8.5 to 9.5 inch level; this was true even when feed rates of scrag and chipper-canter mills were assumed to be equal. Higher returns were projected for the scrag mill than for the chipper-canter at small average log diameters, due to the lower investment assumed for this kind of mill.
