Title: Aspen Particleboards Bonded with Spent Sulfite Liquor Powder Treated with Sulfuric Acid
Description:
Some guidelines for the manufacture of aspen particleboard using sulfuric-acid-treated spent sulfite liquor binder were established. The main advantage of this binder is its low cost as compared to the traditionally used petrochemical-based phenolic resins. The performance of the binder was evaluated against three independent variables: acidity, binder content, and board density. Forty-eight boards were made with binders of 6.4, 8.1, 9.8, and 11.5 percent acid equivalent, and with 4, 6, 8, and 10 percent binder. Board densities were 608, 721, 801, and 851 kg/m3. At 10 percent binder content, binders containing acid equivalents of from 9 to 10 percent were suitable for bonding particleboard for exterior applications.
