Title: Delayed Processing of Felled Trees to Reduce Wood Moisture Content

Live New England hardwood and softwood trees were felled and their moisture content monitored over a 14-day period. Moisture losses in 120 trees systematically cut in 4 replications from July to September averaged 4 percent but varied by species group. The greatest losses occurred in soft hardwood species and in all 120 trees sampled occurred in the first 36 hours. Subsequent losses over the 14-day monitoring period were less significant. The 3 to 5 percent total moisture loss observed could reduce transport and handling costs and increase energy yields of wood used in energy production.
