Title: The effect of lab-made flakes on physical and mechanical property variability of laboratory flakeboard
Description:
The influence of flake characteristics on panel physical and mechanical property variation was investigated. The study compared flakeboard panel properties, and the coefficient of variation (COV) of these properties, for panels made with lab- and mill-produced flakes. A significant reduction of intra-panel (within-panel) and inter-panel (between-panel) COVs for various flakeboard physical and mechanical properties was generally not demonstrated when utilizing carefully prepared lab flakes as compared to 6-month-old mill-produced flakes. One exception was thickness swell properties, where both intra- and inter-panel 24-hour thickness swell variability was reduced on panels made from the lab flakes. Additionally, physical and mechanical property inter-panel variation was less than the intra-panel variation. Data generated from this study suggest that even with great care in preparing laboratory wood composites, variation in property data can be large, especially within a single panel, requiring careful evaluation of the data's usefulness.
